 Write a short reflection on the following quote. Be sure to not only tie in personal opinion, but facts and previous knowledge. Touch on the impact on American History and the world we see around us  “The Constitution only gives people the right to pursue happiness. You have to catch it yourself.” –Benjamin Franklin

SCHEDULEOBJECTIVES  Finish movie  Bell Ringer  Schedule/Objectives  Notes  Articles of Confederation  Federalists v Anti- Federalists  Pass out Rubric for Constitution project  Students will be able to recall foundational information defining the Articles of Confederation  Students will be able to evaluate the relevance of early political thought and their impact on current political parties

 What makes starting a Government difficult for the colonies?  The colonies begin to realize that 13 individual colonies will have a difficult time unifying under one single set of laws  Our Founding Fathers began to construct a uniformed government

 Very first attempt of an American Government  America needed to set up a formal government, and have it be recognized by other foreign governments  This establishes a few things for this new country  Their name!  State’s powers  Not one single government, instead a “league of friendship”  The role of the “central government” is foreign diplomacy  Gave Canada the opportunity to join the cool kids club

 Even in it’s writing, the Articles of Confederation had a lot of problems  As the war was coming to a close, it was obvious that The Confederation Congress could make “decisions” but could not enforce them  Economic issues became a huge point of conflict  Interstate trade/taxes  Taxing for post-war debt

 The new states decide, after the signing of the Treaty of Paris in 1783, that they have to revisit how they unify as one government  After Shay’s Rebellion, the states come together to forge their country  May 25 th, 1787 the Constitutional Convention begins

 In your notes, write a short reflection of who these groups of people evolved into. Who are these groups of people today?
