Involved Parties Border states Border states were states that were for slavery but were against secession and stayed with the Union. -West Virginia -Kentucky -Missouri -Delaware -Maryland

Involved Parties Confederate states of America The confederate states were states that were once part of the union who believed in states rights and thought that slavery should be allowed everywhere. These states declared secession from the Union -South Carolina -Louisiana -Mississippi -Texas -Florida -Virginia -Alabama -Arkansas - Georgia -Tennessee

Alliances Two of the major allies for the south were France and Britain. -Britain gave the south ships and weapons to aid them - France gave them supplies like ammo and food There were also 5 civilized Indian tribes who helped out the south. jpg

The Battle at Fort Sumter April 12, 1861-April 14, 1861 Brigadier General Beauregard (Confederate) attacked Major Anderson(union) at fort Sumter in Charleston, South Carolina. There were no casualties for either sides for two days Major Anderson surrendered to General Beauregard on April 14, 1861 This battle was significant because it officially started the civil war between the Union and Confederate.

1 st Battle of Bull Run July 21, 1861 Mannassas,Viginia The Union, under command of General McDowell with 30,000 troop had a hope to capture the confederate capital Richmond, Virginia. During the battle reinforcements for the confederates came and they were able to force the Union to retreat back to Washington D.C.

1 st Battle of Bull Run The Union Suffered about 3,000 casualties while the Confederates only suffered 2,000. The battle showed both sides that this war was not going to be a quick easy war, but a hard long one that will have a lot of bloodshed.

Battle of Gettysburg July 1-3, 1863 Gettysburg, Pennsylvania General Meade Commanded an army of approximately 94,000 union Troops General Robert E. Lee commanded an army of approximately 71,000 confederate troops. Union Casualties -2-23,000 killed -14,531 injured -5-5,569 captured/missing

2 nd Battle of Fort Fisher Jan 13-15, 1865 Fort Fisher, North Carolina Major General Alfred terry commanded 9,000 land troop while Admiral David D. Porter commanded 60 ships. Major General W.H.C. Whitting commanded 1,900 troops at the fort with about 6,400 troop under the command of Robert F. Hoke just south of the fort and General Bragg with 5,000 troops in Wilmington, North Carolina. Union Casualties -1,338 killed Confederate Casualties -583 killed

Battle of Appomattox Courthouse April 9, 1865 Appomattox County, Virginia Union general Ulysses S. grant led his army to Appomattox courthouse to take out the remainder of Confederate General Lee’s army. General Grant sent Lee a letter requesting his surrender but Lee refused because he had supplies coming and he thought that he could fend them off with fresh supplies. Lee sent troops against small groups of Union soldiers with success.

Battle of Appomattox Courthouse But unluckily, General Grant got to the train station where general Lee’s supplies were coming in and burned them before he got there and at that point general Lee surrendered on April 9 th, 1865 ending the civil war. Main Vehicles: Trains Used steam engines the power the trains Used to transport supplies throughout the north and south. North Carolina had the longest railroad at the time (161.5 miles of track). Allowed then north and south to easily get goods somewhere fast.

America’s future The civil war had a big part in shaping America's future. One thing that it help was that no state can just leave the united states when they want to. And if we had not had the civil war then slavery might so exist and the relationships between blacks and whites might be different.

The Ending The civil war ended when Confederate General Robert E. Lee surrendered to Union general Ulysses s. Grant at Appomattox Courthouse in Appomattox county, Virginia on April 9, The final surrender of confederate troops was on June 23,
