CONTEXT CLUES How can you be a word detective?

STRATEGY 1  After the word “or” EX. Bianca’s handwriting is the epitome, or perfect example, of what the teacher wanted to see.

STRATEGY 2  After a “COMMA” EX. The lima bean is dormant, in a resting place, before you plant it.

STRATEGY 3  Before or After the word “CALLED” EX. An instrument that measures the force of wind is called an anemometer.

STRATEGY 4  In the sentence BEFORE EX. Dr. Brown located an underwater mountain with a flat top. The guyot is located in the Atlantic Ocean.

STRATEGY 5  In the sentence AFTER EX. My father is an oceanographer. He explores and studies the land underwater.
