Center of Gravity

Center of Gravity is a term used to describe the point at which the mass of an object appears to be concentrated. It is the average location of the weight of an object.

Activity Get a piece of paper and draw an irregularly shaped object on it.

2. Punch five holes (randomly spaced) at the edge of the shape.

3. Stick the pushpin (with the string attached) through one of the holes and hang it on a bulletin board. The shape and the string should both swing freely .

4. When everything has stopped moving, use a pen to draw a line on the paper along the string. Move the pushpin to another hole and repeat.

5. Continue until you have used each of the 5 holes.

6. Take the shape down. The five lines intersect at one point 6. Take the shape down. The five lines intersect at one point. If you place your finger under that point, the shape will balance. That means you’ve located the center of gravity for your shape!
