Agenda: 1.Notes/Class Discussion: types of resources used by Inuit people 2.Build a sled to travel to the sea ice camp 3.Video: How do the Netsilik use the resources in their environment to build a sled? 4.Diagram of the reuse of resources: How would you use these materials when the warmer weather comes?

Resources in the environment: The Arctic climate and environment place certain limitations on __________ life. At the same time, the environment contains the necessary resources for _____________.

Types of Resources: Natural Resources: Things that come directly from nature. Example 1: ______________________________ Example 2: ______________________________

Types of Resources: Human Resources: People working to produce goods and services. Example 1: ______________________________ Example 2: ______________________________

Seasonal hunting pattern: Summer: fishing at the stone weir Fall: caribou hunting Winter/Sprin g: hunting seal on the sea ice

It is late fall, and we are at the autumn river camp. We need to build a sled that will allow us to travel to the sea ice camp for the winter months.

What requirements must the sled fulfill?

Use the resources available to you to build your sled: With your group, you must come up with a way to make a sled that uses all of these materials. Record your ideas in either a paragraph or a diagram.

Building a sled at the autumn river camp: 1.How were the materials joined? 2.What properties of the materials allowed them to be used in that way? stories/visionnez/at_autumn_river_camp_pt_2

What types of resources did we use? Natural: Human: Capital:

On the left side of your notebook: Diagram the reuse of materials: When the weather becomes warm the Netsilik take apart their sled and recycle the materials. Draw a diagram showing how each material was used in the sled, and how it will be used in the warm weather.
