Diabeetus A slightly humorous way of pronouncing this deadly disease

Why would they eat this way? Diabetics are people whose pancreas doesn’t produce, or can’t produce enough of, the hormone insulin Depending on the production rate, people are labeled type 1 or type 2 diabetics They have to eat a special diet in order to keep their blood sugar levels stable, otherwise their health problems could increase.

Researched benefits For non-diabetics, a diabetic diet is well balanced, containing all essential proteins, amino acids, and vitamins and minerals For diabetics, a diabetic diet is ESSENTIAL if they want to survive, as it regulates blood sugar and insulin levels. Some leniencies may be made, but not without risk.

Health benefits Besides being completely balanced, a diabetic diet also is low in sugar and sodium, assists with weight loss, and increases energy

Diabetic Do’s and Diabetic Don’ts Diabetics are allowed to eat most foods, mostly fruits and vegetables, breads must be carefully checked to see about added sugar. Diabetics should avoid most processed foods, as they have incredibly high amounts of sodium and sugar, which could cause blood sugar levels to become unstable or critical

Food ideas Breakfast. Whole-wheat pancakes or waffles, one piece of fruit or 3/4 cup of berries, 6 ounces of nonfat vanilla yogurt. Lunch. Cheese and veggie pita, medium apple with 2 tablespoons of almond butter. Dinner. Beef stroganoff; 1/2 cup carrots; side salad with 1 1/2 cups spinach, 1/2 of a tomato, 1/4 cup chopped bell pepper, 2 teaspoons olive oil, 1 1/2 teaspoons red wine vinegar. Snacks. Two unsalted rice cakes topped with 1 ounce of light spreadable cheese or one orange with 1/2 cup 1 percent low- fat cottage cheese.

Current portland food places Sushi restaurants are actually a great location for diabetics to eat as long a sauces are placed on the side and used in moderation. Middle eastern/lebanese food is recommended as well

Restaurant problems One of the problems in marketing a diabetic friendly menu spread, is that most diabetics won’t want to eat it As most of the diabetic food is lower in sodium and sugars, many people say the food tastes “bland” in comparison to standard over-salted fare
