TERM 4 CURRICULUM PLANNING

» Planning achievable term goals: as a class and individually » Choosing issues and problems for inquiry through questioning- brainstorm, KWL » Listing sources of information and possible ways of finding out » Designing a plan- formulating a class rubric: what is our picture of success.

» SEE THINK WONDER: Y chart- using possible immersion to prompt thinking. » QUESTION WEB: This helps students identify questions that are important for the inquiry. The big question is used in the centre as a starting point. » QUESTIONS PLEASE: given only key words or concepts, students formulate questions based on each key word.

» Children need to be able to find and record information, evaluate information sources, design research tools, create bibliographies, summarise information and synthesis information. THEREFORE teach: note taking, note expansion, using search engines, methods for recording information such as the right graphic organiser, design interview questions, checking validity, point of view, and the difference between fact and opinion.

» DOUBLE ENTRY JOURNAL- What I expect? What I found out? Student only complete the what I expect about an excursion, incursion, book prior to having the experience.

» Children need to select key ideas, sorting and showing information, choosing presentation types. THERFORE teach summarising information, identifying main ideas, issues, THEMES (Big concepts). » Use graphic organisers to sort and present » Technology as a way to present- who is the audience? How can I reach out to a wider audience? Why do I want to?

» GRAPHIC ORGANISERS- data charts, lotus diagrams, » FACTS AND REACTIONS- double entry journal. List learnt facts about the inquiry. What is the reaction to learning this fact. » GLOSSARY OF TERMS- define new vocabulary as placemat activity- word, definition, sentence, diagram

» Children need to know how to reflect on the learning process and making accurate self assessments. THEREFORE teach how to manage time, developing success criteria ( I can statements or rubrics) » 2 stars and a wish » Self assessment sheet- teacher questions

» HEAD, HEART AND HAND; What do you think? What do you feel? What could we do? » RUBRIC- highlighting and listing » 2 stars and a wish- reflection tool

» Children need to know how to give honest and effective feedback, how to share and report new learning to others. THEREFORE teachers need to discuss what are the factors of effective feedback and model appropriate responses to feedback. » Make action plans that outline the purpose for action. E.g inform others, teach others, to act in the community- personal or public.

» ACTION PLANS- what is my purpose for action? Who is my audience? What will be my format? What will I use? (presentation: art work, written, oral, technology etc) » FEEDBACK- providing and listening to the feedback.
