Holy Family University ADDIE Model and Benchmarking for choosing a Learning Management System Andrew Pron, Ed.D. andrew.virtualtown.biz/holyfamily “ A vision without a plan is an hallucination. ” Dr. Freeman Hrabowski, University of Maryland Baltimore County EDUCAUSE Conference, January 17 th,

Instructional Design Discussion Phone Interview (9/14): Committee said one goal of the Instructional Technologist is to work with a committee to implement a LMS by Fall of ADDIE Model of Instructional Design. Focus on Development Stage of ADDIE and specifically benchmarking. #21

What is the ADDIE Model? #22

Focus on Development stage of ADDIE Model 3B – Benchmarking and Selecting the Instructional Technology "I didn't think— I investigated. ” Wilhelm Conrad Roentgen ( ), when asked what his thoughts were at the moment when he discovered X rays. 23

#25 Benchmarking & Lessons Learned ASTD's Benchmarking Philosophy: Benchmarking outside of one's own industry or region provides immeasurable value. The opportunity to see different perspectives on the same issue, and how organizations in different industries approach the same challenges, offers the potential for revolutionary improvement not otherwise possible. “…We believe our ability to keep Motorola on the cutting edge of being able to match our educational solutions to critical business needs is due, in part, by our membership in the Benchmarking Forum.” Jill Brosig, Manager Motorola University (2001)

#26 Benchmarking What benchmarking is:  A best-in-class comparison:  Products  Processes  Mission and goal attainment  A search for best practices:  Locate the “ lighthouse ” colleges  A means of stimulating thinking (or brainstorming, discussion, etc.) What benchmarking is not:  A way to make you feel better (or worse)  A copycat process:  Copying competitors can be counter-productive  A strategy to employ when things are going bad Identifying benchmarking partners:  Internal (other departments)  Professional societies  Listservs  Management roundtables; Lunch-time-learning  Case studies  White papers and information portals

#27 Benchmarking American Productivity Quality Center (APQC) Plan: Identify the Best-In-Class (who should I benchmark against?) and key measures. Collect: Conduct site visits to collect data (but only collect the data you need!). Analyze: Identify best practices and develop plan for change. Adapt: Adaptation and/or adoption of the identified best practice.

#28 The Ultimate Goal Of Benchmarking: Adding Competitive Advantage Colleges only (?) How will this technology make us better than the competition?  Product differentiation  Faster? Better? Cheaper? Support activities (e.g., accounting, training, etc.) can be sources of competitive advantage. Every project must be designed to add competitive advantage.

Technology Used Web 2.0 Tool Powtoons- I used Powtoons to demonstrate an excellent resource for reluctant faculty members. The software is web based, user friendly, imports media from a variety of sources, can be published in many formats and uploaded to a LMS, web site, etc. Adobe Dreamweaver- HTML editor for creating web content. Office 365- PowerPoint #29
