Is there Hope for Children with Cancer? Yaritza Delgado

Why I chose my topic Science Career o I want to be a doctor. Maybe specialize in Oncology

Cancer in Children  Cancer has been the leading cause of death in the U.S. in children 1-14 years old  There has been an increase in the numbers of children diagnosed with cancer  The chances of children dying has decreased and the five year survival rate has increased  Children with cancer have an 80 percent chance of being cured

Cancer  Cancer forms when cells start to grow out of control  Cancer cells continue to grow and grow overtop of each other forming a tumor  Growing cancer cells demand a lot of the body’s nutrients everyday

Cancer  Cancer symptoms are similar to those of many common diseases  Metastasis – spreading  Different cancers grow at different paces and respond to different treatments

Reflection  What I learned about:  Myself: I enjoy helping others, especially children  Career: The research and experience I went through while doing the project made me certain that I want to pursue a medical career as a doctor  Was the project worthwhile overall  It was because it helped me be more responsible and it helped me get out of my comfort zone and learn and experience new things.
