Construction RENOVATE YOUR RAMBLER

Your Job You work for an Interior Design firm that has been hired to redesign a residence (use your own house, apartment, etc.)

Your Background You have a two-year certificate from UVU in Construction Management ( Similar degree programs available through SLCC ( _aas.pdf) and many of Utah’s Applied Technology Colleges ( _aas.pdfhttp://

Your Goal Get an Architecture/Interior Design Degree and run your own firm (4 – 6 years of college).

Your Specific Task Using a measuring device (Tape Measure, Measuring Wheel, Laser Distance Measurer, etc.), ruler, pencil and graph paper draw a diagram of the main floor – create a floor plan. This must include correctly drawing the outside shape of the house and each of the walls on the inside. The drawing must be drawn to a scale so that each square foot is represented by one square on the graph paper and 6” by ½ square etc. (Scale 1’: ¼”).

A single line will represent each wall. You may hand-draw or use a template to represent the locations of bathroom, kitchen, laundry/utility room appliances and fixtures. Note: it is understood that the plan will be slightly off based off of not including the wall thicknesses – this activity is meant as a basic drawing/careers exploration.

The Redesign Stage You must design a new floor plan using the same outside wall layout and all of the rooms included in the original plan but in a new configuration. Due to modern engineering, some walls may be left out creating a more open design. The new plan must include at least 1 bedroom, 1 full bathroom, a kitchen/dining room, and a gathering space (front room, game room, etc.).

You must add the symbols for the bathroom fixtures, kitchen appliances/fixtures, and any utility/laundry appliances and fixtures. You are encouraged to add modern features to your new design. Higher points will be awarded to those who show extra effort and design styles. You may cut out pictures from magazines or print off pictures from the internet to show your design ideas. Remember you are looking at a floor plan from the top – a birds-eye view, so your symbols should be represented from the same view.

The Project Portfolio You will attach your original plan to the back of your new design. A cover page must be placed on top of your portfolio including your full name, the name of your design firm, address of residence, outside photo of home (can use Google Earth picture) and date of completion. Any other design samples should be attached to the back: wall paint colors, flooring samples, magazine/internet pictures, etc.

Grading Rubric Floor Plan Redesign 1. Complete Coversheet 5 points _________ 2. Complete Original Floor Plan 5 points _________ 3. Complete Redesigned Floor Plan 10 points _________ 4. Redesign Samples 5 points _________ 5. Professional Portfolio in Order 5 points _________
