What is tone? Tone is one of the many literary devices used by writers to create a literary work.

What is the definition of tone?  Tone: the reflection in a work of an author’s attitude toward his or her subject, characters, or readers  So… tone is how the author feels – about:  The subject  The characters  The readers

What kind of “attitude” can an author show toward something?  Positive – likes it  Negative – does not like it  Suspicious – does not trust it  Sympathetic – feels sorry for it  Fearful – fears it  Enthusiastic – thinks it is great
