GEODEV Centre of Excellence on Geophysical Methods and Observations for Sustainable Development Coordinator: Prof. Zdzisław Kaczmarek Institute of Geophysics, Polish Academy of Sciences

Research focus of the GEODEV Centre Investigation of natural resources Impact of climate on environment and national economy Sustainable water resources management Searching for alternative energy sources Ozone and UV radiation over Central Europe Risk of natural hazards (droughts, floods, seismic risks) Initiation of participation in FP6 RTD projects

Aims of the GEODEV Centre Enhance the role of Polish geophysicists in securing sustainable development of national economy Intensify cooperation with European research institutions Activities Organising workshops and seminars Exchange of scientists Teaching of young scientists Dissemination of knowledge

GEODEV Conferences and Workshops

(387 participants from 19 countries) Two conferences on Geodynamics of Central Europe (2003 and 2005) Workshop on climate impact on water management in Poland (2003) Workshop on ozone and UV radiation over Central Europe (2003) Workshop on water quality hazards and dispersion of pollutants (2004) Three workshops on electrical properties of Carpathian rocks ( ) Symposium on mining and environmental geophysics (2005)

Proceedings of GEODEV workshops Golonka J. & M. Lewandowski (eds.). Geology, Geophysics, Geothermics and Deep Structure of West Carpathians and their Basement; Publ. Inst. Geophysics, 2003, M-28 (363), 184 pp. Liszewska M. (ed.). Potential Climate Changes and Sustainable Water Management; Publ. Inst Geophysics, E-4 (377), 2003, 92 pp. Krzyścin J.W. (ed.) Geophysics. 2006, C-95 (386), in press

GEODEV Publications Moreover, the GEODEV scientists publish in prestigious international journals, such as AGU-EOS, Geophysical Research Letters, Hydrological Sciences Journal, Journal of Geophysical Research, Journal of Atmospheric and Solar Terrestrial Physics, J. of Hydrology, Tectonophysics. Results of research were also presented at a number of international conferences.

GEODEV Visits and Missions ( ) 37 scientists from 18 countries visited the Institute of Geophysics of the Polish Academy of Sciences 14 PhD students of the Institute of Geophysics participated in various training courses abroad Scientists of the Institute of Geophysics paid 35 visits to European geophysical research centres

Participation in FP6 Research Consortia In GLOBAL-2 and GLOBAL-3 the GEODEV scientists participated in three consortia submitting IP proposal (NAHAWASC, PREVIEW and VIEWS) and in one consortium submitting a STREP proposal (PRO-ECO). In GLOBAL-4 the Institute of Geophysics submitted, as coordinator, a STREP proposal (CLIMPACT), with 11 partners from 7 countries. No one of the above initiatives was succesful to be funded.

CLIMPACT Impact of climate variability and change on environment and economy in Central and Eastern Europe

Costs of GEODEV activities XII.2002 – XI.2005 European Commission funds: EURO Other sources: PLN

Future plans The Institute of Geophysics of the Polish Academy of Sciences intends to be an active member of ERA. In particular, GEODEV is looking for a possibility to become a partner in a Network of Excellence in the field of environmental sciences. The level and forms of GEODEV future activities depend on national and international research funding.

Thank you
