CATEGORIES OF MUSICAL INSTRUMENTS DESCRIPTION AND IDENTIFICATION FOR CLASSES 4TH -8 TH Prepared by : A.P. Vinayak

PERCUSSION INSTRUMENTS These are the Instruments in which the sound is produced by beating them, either by hands or by some other means. Eg: cymbal, xylophone, timpani, tambourine, piano, etccymbalxylophonetimpanitambourine pianoetc

NON-PERCUSSION INSTRUMENTS These are the Instruments which produce sound not by beating, instead by other means, like webbing or by blowing air into them.

NON-PERCUSSION INSTRUMENTS ARE OF TWO TYPES STRING INSTRUMENTS: Produce sound by playing the strings. WIND INSTRUMENTS: Produce sound by blowing air into them.

STRING INSTRUMENTS ARE OF TWO TYPES PLUCKED STRING INSTS : Played by plucking the strings with the help of fingers or with the help of plectrum. E.g.- Guitar, Harp, Mandolin, Balalaika, etc.GuitarHarpMandolinBalalaikaetc BOWED STRING INSTS : Played with the help of a bow. WIND INSTRUMENTS ARE OF TWO TYPES WOODWIND INSTS : Produce sound by holding the mouth piece between the lips and then blowing air into them.
