ASSESSING LITERACY/READING LEVELS Most of the time when we think about having to figure out our students’ reading levels, we think it’s such a long process, but it doesn’t have to be. There are many different assessments out there for educators, and even parents, or homeschool teachers/parents Due to the increased use of technology in the classroom, you should incorporate different methods of technology to assess literacy as well.

ASSESSMENTS FOR PHONEMIC AWARENESS Comprehensive Test of Phonological Processing (CTOPP) DIBELS ERDA Iowa Test of Basic Skills (ITBS) Phonological Awareness Test (PAT) Texas Primary Reading Inventory (TPRI)

This is a sample guide to help when picking out assessments to use for literacy. ( ulum/cali/elementary_assessments_ pdf) SAMPLE ASSESSMENT ACCORDING TO SPECIFIC SKILL

WHAT TO THINK ABOUT WHEN ASSESSING… Screening: This should be done at the beginning of each year for all grade levels Diagnostic tests: Used to measure certain skills; they provide the teacher with very detailed knowledge of what the student understands about that particular skill Progress Monitoring: Should be completed at least 4 times a year (once per nine weeks) to check students' progress Outcome Assessment: The end of the year assessment to determine effectiveness of reading program Using assessments for instruction: The point of assessing a reading level is to let it help you guide your instruction. Students should be placed in reading levels accordingly and reading books according to their levels as well. How do you know when your assessment was effective? Chart and record students’ growth/lack of growth and analyze the data to guide the instruction
