Daily Learning Targets October I can demonstrate comprehension of the denotation of words. I can edit sentences for mistakes in mechanics (colons, especially). I can write routinely over periods of time as a way to explore themes related to something I’m reading. I can demonstrate comprehension of texts by answering literal and interpretive questions. I can make inferences from a text based on explicit evidence within the text and my own knowledge.

Colons rule 2  A colon instead of a semicolon may be used between independent clauses when the second sentence explains, illustrates, paraphrases, or expands on the first sentence.  Example: He got what he worked for: he really earned that promotion.  If a complete sentence follows a colon, as in the previous example, it is up to the writer to decide whether to capitalize the first word.
