RADIATION THERAPY By: Zach Liss
How does Radiation Therapy Work? Uses high-energy radiation to shrink tumors and kill cancer cells by damaging the DNA.
Locating Cancer To locate cancer you go through scans such as a Computerized Tomography (CT) scan’s, Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) scan’s, Positron Emission Tomography (PET) scan’s, and also Ultra Sound scan’s. Mask used to receive Radiation Treatments
How Is Radiation Therapy Delivered? It is delivered by machine outside of the body (external-beam radiation therapy). It can also be delivered by radioactive material placed in the body near the cancer. Being treated with Radiation can also damage normal cells as well as cancerous cells. Treatments are very carefully planned and preformed.
Photon Radiation Most common form of radiation used for cancer treatments. Uses radioactive Cobalt (), radioactive Cesium (), and or a machine called Linear Accelerator (Linac for short). Uses radioactive Cobalt ( 60 Co ), radioactive Cesium (CsCl), and or a machine called Linear Accelerator (Linac for short).CsCl
Neutron Beams Used for cancer treatments of the neck, head, and prostate. Also used to treat certain inoperable tumors. Only a few facilities use it in the United States.
