The Earth and it’s layers and plate tectonics

Inner Core - solid, hot Nickel & Iron minerals

Outer Core Very hot liquid Nickel and Iron. Scientists think that circulation in the outer core creates the earth’s magnetic field.

Mantle Surrounds the core Contains the semi-solid magma Tectonic plate movement

Lithosphere Rigid outer covering VERY thin Contains the crust (continental and oceanic) and uppermost of the mantle

Alfred Wegener suggested that all land was once together Continental Drift Alfred Wegener suggested that all land was once together

Continental Drift He found evidence from mountain ranges, fossils and rock layers to support his theory

Called his super-continent Pangaea (meaning all lands in Greek) Continental Drift Called his super-continent Pangaea (meaning all lands in Greek) Could NOT explain HOW things moved

Theory of Plate Tectonics Earth’s surface is divided into plates

Theory of Plate Tectonics Plates contain BOTH ocean and continent

Theory of Plate Tectonics The plates are CONSTANTLY moving (causing earthquakes and volcanoes)
