M&MS AND THE SCIENTIFIC METHOD MINI-LAB Ms. Jho AnnLife Science Room #103

Expectations: 1. EATING THE M&Ms BEFORE MY PERMISSION IS NOT ALLOWED!! YOU WILL GET A CHANCE TO EAT SOME IF YOU’RE MATURE ENOUGH TO HANDLE THIS.

Problem #1: How many total M&Ms are in the mini-bag?  Hypotheses: An Educated Guess  Develop a hypothesis on your mini-labs (Talk with your partner or lab tables): Start the hypothesis by writing, “There are….”

Problem #2: How many of each color M&Ms are in the mini-bag?  Hypotheses: An Educated Guess  Develop a hypothesis on your mini-labs (Talk with your partner or lab tables): Start the hypothesis by writing, “There are…..” Red: Orange: Yellow: Purple: Orange:

How Do We Know Our Hypotheses Are Correct??  WE MUST TEST AND EXPERIMENT!!!!  Experiment: On your graph paper record the number of each color of m&ms you have in a data table:

Analyzing Data Classroom Data Table Table Number Total # of m&ms # of Green m&ms # of Purple m&ms # of Yellow m&ms # of Orange m&ms # of Red m&ms XXXXXXX XXXXXXX XXXXXXX Average:

Analyzing Data: Create Your Own Bar Graph!  MAKE A BAR GRAPH SHOWING THE CLASSROOM DATA FOR THE NUMBERS OF EACH COLOR OF M&Ms!  Use graph paper to design your bar graph.  Come up with a title!  Label your axis and create a key to show what each color bar represents.  Make bars on your graph paper that represent the average number of each color of skittle.

Example Bar Graph:

Discussion Questions  Answer the 3 discussion questions.

Discussing Results…. TELL EVERYONE THE CONCLUSION WE CAME UP WITH!!!!!!!
