Multi-Step Equations Sol A.4

To solve multi-step equations you form a series of simpler equivalent equations. To do this use the properties of equality, inverse operations and properties of real numbers. You use the properties until you isolate the variable.

Combining Like Terms 5 = 5m – m 5 = 5m + 2m – 23Comm. Prop. Of Addition 5 = 7m – 23Combine Like Terms = 7m – Add 23 to both sides 28 = 7mSimplify 28/7 = (7m)/7Divide each side by 7 4 = m Check your work.

Your Turn 11m – 8 – 6m = 22

Your Turn -2y y = 14

Solving a Multi-Step Equation Word Problem Turn to page 95 in your textbook and lets look at “Problem 2” together.

Solving an Equation Using the Distributive Property -8(2x – 1) = x + 8 = 36Distributive Property -16x + 8 – 8 = 36 – 8 Subtract 8 from both sides -16x = 28Simplify (-16x)/-16 = 28/-16Divide each side by -16 X = -7/4 Simplify

Your Turn 18 = 3(2x – 6)

Solving an Equation That contains Fractions There are 2 methods that you can you to solve an equation that contains fractions. I will show you both methods and you need to try them both to decide which works best for you!

Method 1 Write the terms using a common denomitaor 3/4x – 1/3x = 10

Method 2 Clear the fractions from the equation 3x/4 – x/3 = 10

Your turn (2b)/5 + (3b)/4 = 3

Your Turn 1/9 = 5/6 – m/3
