Controls and Variables Activity

In your groups, you will be reading about some scientific experiments After you read the scenario, you and your group will answer some questions about the variables and the experimental design on your white boards Be prepared to share your answers!

Experiment #1 Mrs. Turgeon thinks that a special juice will increase the productivity of her students. She creates two groups of 50 students each and assigns each group the same task (in this case, they're supposed to staple a set of papers). Group A is given the special juice to drink while they work. Group B is not given the special juice. After an hour, Mrs. Turgeon counts how many stacks of papers each group has made. Group A made 1,587 stacks, Group B made 2,113 stacks. Identify the: 1. Control Group 2. Independent (Manipulated) Variable 3. Dependent (Responding) Variable 4. What should Mrs. Turgeon‘s conclusion be? 5. How could this experiment be improved?

Experiment #2 A Von Steuben gym teacher notices that the gym showers are covered in a strange green slime. His friend tells him that coconut juice will get rid of the green slime. The gym teacher decides to check this out by spraying half of the shower with coconut juice. He sprays the other half of the shower with water. After 3 days of "treatment" there is no change in the appearance of the green slime on either side of the shower. 1. What was the initial observation? Identify the- 2. Control Group 3. Independent (Manipulated) Variable 4. Dependent (Responding) Variable 5. What should the gym teacher's conclusion be?

Experiment #3 A Chicago Bears player wants his team to start winning. He heard that people who are exposed to radio waves will become extra strong (and get more tackles.) He decides to perform this experiment on mice first by placing 10 mice near a radio for 5 hours. He compared these 10 mice to another 10 mice that had not been exposed. His test consisted of a heavy block of wood that blocked the mouse food. he found that 8 out of 10 of the radio waved mice were able to push the block away. 7 out of 10 of the other mice were able to do the same. Identify the-1. Control Group 2. Independent (Manipulated) Variable 3. Dependent (Responding) Variable 4. What should the player’s conclusion be? 5. How could this experiment be improved?

Experiment #4 The band One Direction was told that a certain hair product was the newest best thing on the market, it even claims to cause 50% longer lasting wavy hair. Interested in this product, they buy the hair product and compare it to their usual hair product. One test subject (A) used the original hair product and another test subject (B) used the new Experimental hair product. Subject A reported having wavy hair for 30 minutes. Subject B reported having wavy hair for 45 minutes. Identify the- 1. Control Group 2. Independent (Manipulated) Variable 3. Dependent (Responding) Variable 4. Explain whether the data supports the advertisements claims about its product.

Experiment #5 The TV producers of “American Ninja Warriors” want to know if a new vitamin on the market will help their athletes perform better. They have a usual vitamin that their athletes take that seems to work okay. Design an experiment to help them decide if they should invest in the new, more expensive vitamin.
