My Fun Facts on the Film- Finishing Oz

Fun Facts on the Film Horses were “colored” with flavored Jello! Horses were “colored” with flavored Jello! Set temps were often over 100 degrees as Technicolor required more lighting. Toto was a female Cairn Terrier named “Terry.” She was injured during filming (one of the witch’s guards accidentally stepped on her) and was paid $125 a week, which was more than many of the Munchkin actors received-$50. “Toto” had a happy career in movies until she died in 1945.

Burt Lahr’s costume weighed around 100lbs and was made of real lion pelts…. After attempting to eat lunch in the MGM cafeteria while still in costume, they scared other workers so badly they ate lunch in their dressing rooms thereafter! Margaret was said to be a really nice lady, but her costume scared kids on the MGM lot they cut many of her scenes in the film 

Won “Best Song” for Academy Awards Nominated for 6 Academy Awards BUT lost to Gone With the Wind Snow in the “poppy” scene was asbestos  Tin Man’s “oil” is really chocolate syrup! Ruby slippers: 4 sets, all made with real rubies valued at $3million each! Ladies… size 5! Tornado in the film: muslin stocking with dust and dirt “Munchkins” were a troupe from Europe known as “Singer Midgets” and many came to escape Hitler—their voices were dubbed since they couldn’t speak English. “Winged Monkey” actors were injured in the wires when they snapped and the actors fell.
