America before 1600 Many people think the history of the US began with Columbus, but it actually started much earlier. The oldest people in America are the Native Americans. There is a good TV series on Native Americans called “500 Nations”. Please look it up on YOUTUBE.500 Nations Biographies/SittingBull.html

Native American Tribes and Languages ABOUT 500 NATIONS ALMOST 300 LANGUAGES

5500 BC-1492 AD The oldest tribe may be the Anasazi who lived in the Southwest US since 5500 BC.the Anasazi Other famous tribes are Navaho, Cherokee and Shawnee. Many US place names are from Native American tribes: Missouri, Iowa, Kansas, Illinois, Erie, Cheyenne, etc..

Native Americans Today Now most of the Native Americans live in three states: California, Arizona and Oklahoma.

1492 The coming of Columbus Columbus "discovered" the New World in 1492 and claimed it for Spain. He was sent by King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella of Spain. He landed somewhere in the Bahama Islands. The native Americans there were called Arawaks.

What happened to the Arawaks? Some Arawaks were made slaves by the Europeans. Others got European diseases and died. Look at what happened to them: ,000 Arawaks  ,000 Arawaks  Arawaks

Columbus wasn ’ t the only one! In 1497 John Cabot sailed from England to Canada and Vasco da Gama sailed from Spain to India. In 1519 Magellan sailed from Spain around the world. John CabotVasco da Gama Magellan

even more explorers…! In 1534, Jacques Cartier began exploring Canada. From France: In 1603, Champlain continued to explore Canada.

From England In 1579, Sir Francis Drake landed in Central California. This 16 th century ring was found near Roanoke Island where the colony was supposed to have been. From Roanoke colony was established by Sir Walter Raleigh in N. Carolina, but it died out.

From Spain… (besides Columbus) 1520 Coronado entered the Southwest and took Indians as slaves Don Juan de Onate founded and settled New Mexico

And from Portugal… Amerigo Vespucchi explored the east coast of South America between 1499 and 1502 And gave America it’s name! Check it out: watch?v=Od9as8HR5Go watch?v=Od9as8HR5Go

Beginning of “The new Europe” SO, in the 1500s, France, Spain, England and other European countries all started colonies in “the new world” What was happening in Japan? What will happen in the 1600s? We’ll find out next week!
