“Go Over Quiz” Buddy Grade Or “Finish Tree Map” EQ: What threatened national security under T.J’s administration?

 The student will be able to examine the threats to our nation's security, the embargo act, and the battle of Tippecanoe as evidenced by completed Cornell notes and summaries with 80% accuracy.  Where does this fit into our Early Republic Learning Goal Scale?  What do you need to be able to do with this objective to reach mastery or SCALE Everest?

1. Tribute: Money paid by one country to another in return for protection 2. Stephen Decatur: American sailor who burned the ship, Philadelphia 3. Embargo: a government order that forbids or ends foreign trade 4. Smuggling: the act of illegally importing or exporting goods 5. Tecumseh: Shawnee native who urged resistance against American settlement 6. William Henry Harrison: Governor of the Indiana Territory who took action against Tecumseh

 Trade with European nations was crucial to the U.S’s economy  Another trade issue with the US was dealing with pirates on the high seas  The pirates came from four small countries in Africa  They made up the Barbary States  They raided ships, stole property, and enslaved sailors for ransom  Some European nations stopped the Barbary states by paying them a tribute and in exchange they would leave the European ships alone  The US also paid a tribute to end the piracy, but only for a little while

 President Jefferson decided to send warships to the Mediterranean Sea to protect US Merchant ships  At first this action by T.J. went badly, the warship Philadelphia’s crew was imprisoned by Pirates and US sailor Stephen Decatur burned the ship to stop the pirates from using it  The next year, US marines captured Tripoli and inspired a wave or American confidence to deal with foreign powers

 In 1803, France and England were again at war  US remained neutral and continued to trade with both countries  Again British warships started seizing American ships trading w/ France. France did the same  Between 1803 and 1807 France seized 500 American ships and Britain more than 1,000  Jefferson will respond to this by created an embargo and Congress will pass it in  This hurt the American economy badly dropping exports from 109 million to 25 million..many people lost their jobs  Some Americans turned to illegal smuggling to get around the embargo  Congress eventually overturned the Embargo Act in 1809

 After the battle of Fallen Timbers, thousands of settlers moved west.  Ohio became a state in 1803  Settlement had a negative impact on Native Americans who suffered from European diseases who which killed thousands of them  The N.A. population decreased from a loss of food and disease  The Shawnee’s were hit hard by settlement and two brothers Tenskwatawa(the Prophet) and Tecumseh urged resistance against settlement  They organized western tribes into a league to restore Indian lands and were being armed STILL by the British  In 1811, William Henry Harrison governor of the Indiana Territory took action and defeated Shawnee villages on the Tippacanoe River.  The Battle of Tippacanoe marked the high point of N.A resistance to American settlement

 What threats to the US’s security occurred under Thomas Jefferson and how did he respond  Complete progress chart for objective M and N
