The Reign of Solomon II.Solomon Anointed as King (1 Ki. 1:11-48) A. Political Intrigue (i.e., Family Drama)(v.5- 10) B. The Prophet’s Advice (v.11-14) C. David affirms Solomon as his choice (v.28-37). D. Solomon is King (v.38-40).

The Reign of Solomon III. Solomon: His Father’s Child (1 Ki. 2:13- 46). A. Adonijah, his brother (v.13-25)—Killed! B. Abiathar, the priest (v.26-27)—Expelled! C. Joab, the general (v.28-34)—Killed! D. Shimei, the man who cursed David (v ), Executed for disobedience. Solomon Didn’t Play Around!!

The Reign of Solomon IV. Solomon, the Wise (1 Kings 3) A. He prays for Wisdom rather than wealth or fame (v.3-9). B. God grants him Wisdom plus all the other things he didn’t ask for (v.10-14). C. Wisdom on Display: 2 Prostitutes & a Baby (v.16-28). D. Summary: 1 Kings 4:29-34

The Reign of Solomon Solomon was wise, but he had a fault… “…only he sacrificed and made offerings at the high places.” 1 Kings 3:3b

The Reign of Solomon V.God’s Word Holds True A. Samuel warned Israel of the problems with earthly kings (see, 1 Sam. 8:10-18). B. Solomon begins to fulfill Samuel’s prophetic warning:

The Reign of Solomon 1.Establishes officials, each of whom is responsible for the king’s provisions for 1 month a year (1 Ki. 4:1-19) 2.He drafted a labor force of 30,000 men, plus 70,000 burden-bearers, 80,000 stone cutters and 3300 foremen (1 Ki. 5:13-18). 3. He heavily taxed the people for his extravagant lifestyle (1 Ki. 10:14-21).

The Reign of Solomon VI.Solomon & The Temple A. In addition to his wisdom, Solomon is best noted for this architectural achievement. B. David desired to build God a temple, but God would not allow him (1 Chron. 22:2-11) C. Solomon builds the temple (1 Ki. 6) D. Solomon dedicates the Temple (1 Ki. 8) He offered: 22,000 oxen and 120,000 sheep (v.63)

The Reign of Solomon VII.Solomon’s Demise (1 Kings 11:1-8) A. Solomon’s policy of marriage alliances was a spiritual stumbling block. B. He had 700 wives and 300 concubines (“polygamy”). C. Solomon’s wives turned his heart away from God and toward foreign gods (“idolatry”)(v.4)

The Reign of Solomon D. As punishment for Solomon’s sin of idolatry, God stripped all but one tribe from Solomon’s lineage thus leading to the Divided Monarchy (1 Kings 11:9-13).
