Presentation transcript:

“Just look at our web site…”

I hate the title of this session, and so should you.

Why do you need your own site?  More freedom to include what YOU think is important  Use as a supplement to service and DoD sites  The easiest way to publish your information  There are other folks out there trying to do your job

I’m old and set in my ways…  The more people involved the slower the process  A camel is ________________.  With modern tools, computer wizardry isn’t required  You instantly become more valuable

How to kill a web site  Bog it down  Confusing navigation  Poor content No content, just lots of linksNo content, just lots of links No value addedNo value added Outdated or incorrectOutdated or incorrect  Poor page layout

The Basics  A consistent “look” Easy on the eyesEasy on the eyes Saves you timeSaves you time Builds an identityBuilds an identity  Consistent use of the same graphics speeds load times

Navigation  Plan ahead – draw it out  Three clicks is ideal No splash pagesNo splash pages  Home page, filter, destination  Consistent  No “dead ends”  Return to home and filter (breadcrumbs)

Using Color  Limit the number of colors TextText LinksLinks Viewed linksViewed links  No garish colors  Ensure contrast enables readability  Monitors render colors differently

Fonts  Limit number of fonts  Use common fonts; likely to be loaded on most computers  Large enough to read  Not all fonts look good on the screen Some appear to break upSome appear to break up Beware italics, bolding is betterBeware italics, bolding is better  Avoid using all capitals

Creating a template  DO IT RIGHT, EVEN IF IT TAKES FOREVER!  Will determine how your entire site looks  Will save you lots of time if done well  Use CSS (cascading style sheets) Make global changes with one changeMake global changes with one change Enables faster downloadEnables faster download Saves tons of authoring timeSaves tons of authoring time

Typical Layout  Place elements in a table  Use common image at top  Navigation on the left  Return links and required links at bottom  Use a separate page for common elements such as navigation, banners, etc. to allow for easy changes  Leave generous “white space”  Reduce clutter

Handicapped Access  Use alt text for all images  Avoid image maps, graphs, charts, audio and video content  Forms must be accessible or offer option  Skip navigation links  Must work without style sheets  Don’t use color for navigation  Verify using online tools such as WAVE

Beware of…  Animated Graphics - Too slow, too “cute”  Sound - Too slow, irritating when repeated  Plug-ins - User may not have
