GIST-24 Meeting December MSG PROGRAMME STATUS Presentation to the GIST-24 meeting

GIST-24 Meeting December CURRENT SITUATION (as of 12 December 2005) MSG-1 No major satellite anomalies were reported during since the last GIST MSG-2 Nominal launch date 21 December 2005

GIST-24 Meeting December MSG-2 Commissioning (as of 12 December 2005) MSG-2 Commissioning Outline Satellite location during commissioning –MSG-2 : 6.5°W ± 0.4°W, inclination > 1° –MET-8 (MSG-1) : 3.4 ± 0.25°W –MET-7 : 0° –MET-6 : 10°E GERB will start commissioning ~6 weeks after launch, unless this corresponds to the Sun avoidance season MSG-2 planned entry into operational service August 2006 after relocation to 0°

GIST-24 Meeting December MSG-2 Commissioning (as of 12 December 2005)

GIST-24 Meeting December MSG-2 Commissioning (as of 12 December 2005) Commissioning GERB Details –week Functional Commissioning –02-03/02/06 First GERB Images available –week Calibration and Validation start –11/02/ /04/06 Spring sun avoidance : GERB Mode = SAFE (TBC)

GIST-24 Meeting December MSG-2 Commissioning (as of 12 December 2005) Commissioning SEVIRI Details –24/01/06 SEVIRI First Image –20/02/ /03/06 SEVIRI Alternative Repeat Cycles –24/02/ /04/06 Solar Scan period : GERB mode = SUNBLOCK or SAFE –13/03/06 Space Scan : GERB mode = SUNBLOCK or SAFE –14/03/06 Short Lunar Scan : GERB mode = CALx (TBC) –14/03/ /06/06 24h Lunar Scan period : GERB mode = SUNBLOCK or SAFE (TBC) –22/03/06 Start of Image dissemination –24/05/06 Start of Product dissemination –30/06/06 Start of Routine Operations –01/08/06 Entry into operation

GIST-24 Meeting December MSG-2 Commissioning (as of 12 December 2005) Commissioning Preparation –MSG-2 Commissioning Rehearsals ran at EUMETSAT on OPE environment –Testing of the upgraded leased line interface from EUMETSAT to RAL for dual data stream (MSG-1 & 2) on OPE environment –Operational implementation of sftp for TSOL jitter data transfer from EUMETSAT to RAL –Installation of GERB Tools on GERB EGSE at EUMETSAT for MSG-1 operations –Upgrades to EUMETSAT procedures for commissioning completed

GIST-24 Meeting December GERB OPERATIONAL DETAILS (as of 12 December 2005) GERB-2 operational news since the last GIST –15 May - Commercial Power outage at EUMETSAT - SEVIRI to Standby –15-20 June - First N-S Manoeuvre –4 July - GERB switched to ROM mode to test IMPF packet counter anomaly –22 July - Commercial Power outage at EUMETSAT - SEVIRI to Standby –18 Aug - 29 Oct - GERB in SAFE mode for sun avoidance season - no problems encountered with switch to DSM rotation modes –31 Aug - SEVIRI HRV lower window switched to track illuminated area of earth –23 November UPS test - GERB Router connection to UPS unplugged, otherwise no problems reported –04 Dec - GERB IOU Temperature OOL - satellite is reaching predicted end of life temperatures

GIST-24 Meeting December GERB OPERATIONAL DETAILS (as of 12 December 2005) GERB-2 AutoSAFE Anomaly Review Update -Telemetry anomaly signatures have been identified. -A test programme using the GERB DM DSM has been initiated to assess the potential causes of the anomaly. -A patch to increase the speed of the the QFM movement to blocked will be tested in December 2005 for use on GERB-1/2. -Initial analysis seems to indicate a low risk of contamination from the greased bearing design partially tested in parallel with the baseline GERB bearing. -Review board is expected to come up with recommendations for GERB-1/2 and GERB-3/4 early next year following results from the planned tests.

GIST-24 Meeting December GERB OPERATIONAL DETAILS (as of 12 December 2005) Planned Activities –Addition of TSOL jitter information onto the GERB data packet sent from EUMETSAT to RAL (partially complete) –Migration of IMPF to GGSPS data transfer to sftp (TBC) –Changes to MSG-1 GERB sun avoidance operations (TBC) –Back-up ftp transfer of MSG-2 data from GERB EGSE

GIST-24 Meeting December OTHER GERB INSTRUMENTS (as of 12 December 2005) GERB-1 Integrated on MSG-2. GERB-3 IEU & IUH incorporated into GERB-4 Backup. The IEU will be further modified for improvements to the DSM timing. IOU will be stored under a dry nitrogen environment in RAL from Jan GERB-4 GERB-4 backup available (GERB-3 IEU & IUH + STM IOU). GERB-4 expected to be delivered mid-Jan After satellite AIT it will be returned to RAL for detector replacement (TBC) and storage.

GIST-24 Meeting December GERB Parallel Operations (as of 12 December 2005) Spring Sun Avoidance Season –MSG-1 GERB sun avoidance season: 14 Feb - 23 Apr –MSG-2 GERB sun avoidance season: 11 Feb - 26 Apr –MSG-1 GERB protection mechanisms: satellite safe function patch; GERB QFM patch (TBC); pixel thresholds –MSG-2 GERB protection mechanisms: satellite safe function patch (TBC); GERB QFM patch (TBC); pixel thresholds; battery modification Question: –Given the desire to perform GERB-1 & 2 cross calibration and data collection for AMMA and the risk that the GERB-1 and 2 DSM anomaly is likely to reoccur without much warning. Does GIST have a preference for GERB-1 & 2 operations during their respective sun avoidance seasons?

GIST-24 Meeting December GERB Parallel Operations (as of 12 December 2005) Future Dual Satellite Operations –During the MSG-2 commissioning period and following MSG-2 relocation to 0° there is likely to be periods of parallel MSG-1 and 2 SEVIRI imaging. It is assumed that GERB will also be operated during these periods (baring sun avoidance restrictions). –EUMETSAT are currently investigating the introduction of a rapid scan service for MSG (based on the MTP service) where a limited portion of the earth is scanned at a higher repeat rate. Questions: –Is GERB data without SEVIRI images of any value? –How should GERB be operated on a satellite performing SEVIRI rapid scans?
