1 KINGS Chapter 01 ADONIJAH – THE WOULD-BE KING I.INTRODUCTION A.Tonight we begin 1st Kings.

1. Background on 1st and 2nd Kings: a) Originally – these were just one book. (1) The Books of Samuel and Kings. b) 150 B.C. – put them all together. (1) Later “division” of 4 books was maintained.

c) Believed that Jeremiah wrote this book. d) Book about kings! (1) Covers “about” 500 years. (2) Begins with King David being old. II.1KINGS 1:1-4

A.King David 70 years old! 1. He has led hard life of a soldier! 2. He can’t keep himself warm. a) Young virgin brought to “lie with” King David. b) Verse 4

III.1KINGS 1:5-10 A.2Samuel 3: Absalom killed firstborn Amnon. a) Takes care of # 1 and #3 son. 2. Chileab only mentioned in 2 Samuel.

a) Adonijah next in line for the throne! (1) This was not his call. (2) David great King, not a good father. (3) He said nothing to Adonijah. (a) Adonijah in “full- swing” to become king.

(4) Left out men who wouldn’t agree with him. (a) This is NOT from the Lord. (i) Nathan was voice of the Lord! (ii) Adonijah was not to become king. (iii) Solomon was to be the next king.

(a) He didn’t invite them! (b) He was VERY good looking! IV.1KINGS 1:11-40 A.Abiathar’s plan was interrupted.

1. Haven’t seen Nathan since he confronted David about his sin! a) He remains a trusted friend and advisor? b) Speaks about David’s ability to receive a rebuke 2. Imagine what is going on at Abiathar’s “party”.

V.1KINGS 1:41-49 A.Psalms 75: James 4:6 2. Adonijah trying to exalt himself! a) Will lead to failure. (1) Everyone running for their lives.

VI.CONCLUSION A.1Kings 1: If intentions honorable, why be afraid of Solomon? a) Runs for the tabernacle. b) Solomon shows great mercy to him.

B.Restate couple of things: 1. Lord’s plan for Solomon to become King. a) NOTHING is going to stop that! 2. Lord not in it we can connive all we want, He will not be in it.

a) We can self-promote all we want, it will fail. b) Better off to let the Lord work things out. (1) We can convince ourselves! (2) Nothing too difficult for the Lord. (3) Perhaps we are not ready.
