Team Sports By: Casey Walsh

Objective I will be teaching elementary students how to exert themselves physically while working with others to complete specific tasks (such as being a part of a sport’s team). They will be playing soccer and by the end of the week my students will learn how to use their motor skills, strategize, be more physically fit, social and psychological factors, and learn how to have a good attitude. By playing soccer and learning something new about being on a team each day, my students should learn all of the key components as mentioned above with 90% accuracy by the end of the week.

Day by Day (1) Day 1: Motor Skills – The motor skills children learn by performing physical activities help them throughout their entire lives. Today my students will learn how to properly warm up their motor skills before they start playing. Day 2: Strategy – Being on a team sport, students learn game play strategy in addition to movement strategy. Today my students will have to come up with a specific strategy during half-time so that they can attack the other team in the second half of the game.

Day by Day (2) Day 3: Fitness – If students are playing on a team, they are maintaining regular exercise and they are increasing their fitness level. Students should learn this day that being physically fit is important for a healthy life. Today my students will run one mile around the track and see how fast they can do it. Day 4: Social and Psychological Factors – Sports and games force students to socialize and teach students about teamwork, sportsmanship and working together to complete a task. On the psychologically part, students learn how to keep their heads in the game. Today my students will fill out a note card telling me what they believe they achieved today during the soccer game, and whether or not they contributed to the team.

Day by Day (3) Day 5: Attitude – On order for physical education to leave a lasting effect, students must maintain positive attitudes. Students maintain positive attitudes toward each other and toward school, even, by finding pleasure in their physical education. Today my students will observe all of their classmates and pick out who has a good attitude and who doesn’t. Those who do not, will have to explain why they have a bad attitude and tell me what they are going to do to fix it.

Media and Materials I will show my students a different video the second, third, and fourth day of the week before we get started with our physical activity. On order to do this I will have a smart board available to use in the gym. – Each video will be about being on a sports team, I will show a video about attitude, team bonding, and fitness The first day and the last day of the week I will handout worksheets to me students about all the different aspects of teamwork. For materials, I will have different kinds of sport equipment such as: soccer balls, cones, and different colored shirts for the children to wear to establish the different teams.
