STATEHOOD AT LAST

Political Parties  Mormons-People’s Party supported by Deseret News  Non-Mormons-Liberal Party-Salt Lake Tribune  At first the People’s Party dominated  More Non-Mormons moved in and Mormons lost their right to vote

National Party  In order to show conformity to national sentiments Utah went to the National Parties: Republicans and Democrats.  The Mormons were originally part of the Democratic Party.

Acceptance of Mormons  SLC Temple Open House  Second Place at World’s Columbian Expo

Writing a Constitution  One of the biggest debate was whether to let women vote.  Utah decided to let women vote.

Prohibition  Many people were for it because:  Drunkenness behaviors  Many were against it because:  Attack on personal liberties  Hurt Utah’s economy

What do you think  In Utah today many people want to change our state liquor laws. They want to be able to order a drink of alcohol in restaurants and to buy liquor in grocery stores. They think our liquor laws hurt our economy by keeping visitors who want to drink alcohol from holding large conventions and vacationing here. Other Utahans think the laws are important to reduce the amount of drunk driving and other problems of alcoholism. What do you think? DNW

UTAH VOTED AGAINST PROHIBITION!

Legislative Branch  Is in charge of writing and passing bills.  Is divided into two house  House of Representatives  Senate  Both houses have the power to override a governor’s veto.

Executive  The chief executive in Utah is the governor.  The Governor’s main job is to enforce the laws  Governor has many responsibilities:  Directs Government  Commander in Chief of National Guard  Approves/Vetos bills  Pardon

Judicial  Interprets Law  Determines if people are guilty of a crime
