Written document that guides schools efforts to establish an environment that promotes students: Health Well-being Ability to learn What is a School Wellness Policy?

2004: Child Nutrition and Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for WIC Reauthorization Act : Districts required to establish a local school wellness policy 2012: Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act (Proposed) : Districts began implementing the new requirements Wellness Policy History

Goals for: Nutrition education and promotion Physical activity Other school-based activities that promote wellness Nutrition guidelines School meal guidelines Smart Snacks Content of the Policy

Establish wellness policy leadership Permit participation Parents, students, school nutrition, physical education teachers, school health professionals, school board, and school administrators Inform and update the public Who is Involved?

Districts should keep the following on file: A copy of the most recent policy Documentation that public was informed Documentation of the district’s efforts to review and update Including who is involved Methods used to create awareness of involvement A copy of most recent assessment State Agency Review Process

Description of each school building’s progress in meeting the wellness policy goals A summary of each school’s local wellness activities and events Contact information Information on how individuals and the public can get involved Annual Progress Reports

Assessment of the policy to determine: Compliance with the wellness policy Progress made in attaining goals Need to update or modify Let’s Take a Look! How does your district measure up? What are some areas of improvement? Triennial Assessments
