The Russian Civil war went from /1923 The civil war was a multi-sided international conflict in Russia It took place after the collapse of the Provisional Government and the takeover of Petrograd by the Bolsheviks.

The main conflict in the civil war was between the Bolshevik Red Army and the anti-Bolshevik force which was called the White Army. Many foreign armies were involved and volunteered to fight on one side or the other. The largest foreign participant was Japan ( men) who fought in majority, for the whites. The were many other forces who fought. These included the Green Army and the Black Army and some armies who were ruled by different individuals.

The White Army were against the Bolsheviks. They included the Cadets, some Mensheviks and Socialist revolutionaries. The leaders of this army were Denikin, Yudenitch, Kolchak. Others who joined included landowners who had lost their estates, factory owners who had their property nationalized and members of the Russian Orthodox Church. The Red Army were the Bolshevik army. Leon Trotsky was the head of this army which was made up of workers and peasants by order of the Soviet Government. At the end of the civil war the Red Army had men. There were other armies such as the Green Army and the Black Army. These armies did not have specific enemies they fought against the Reds and the Whites or took sides with one or the other.

Frontiers, 1921 Bolshevik control, Nov 1918 Maximum advances of 'White' forces 潶‱

Their opponents, the White Army were disunited and thousands of miles apart. Trotsky could fight the 1 on 1. Trotsky was very smart and a good leader, hence the Red Army has good strategies and tactics. The red army had control of the main cities of Moscow and Petrograd, railways and an army of men.The army was united, disciplined and had internal lines of communication.

The red army has the CHEKA. The CHEKA murdered all whites they found which were around 7000 people. The Bolsheviks were united. The Red Army believed in 1 thing in coming, Marxism. They believed that they were fighting for a better world. Unlike the Red Army, the White Army was fighting because of the hated foreign armies including Russia. Bolsheviks made more rules. They had no factories and enforced military discipline. Strikes were made illegal and food was rationed witch meant everyone got a fair bit. The army had supplies form the peasants.
