4.2 Delegating

Write the missing heads A-G Discuss with your partner and work out the headings. Keys: 1. A 2. E 3. C 4. D 5. G 6. F 7. B Make use of their special skills---skills that you may not have. …bits and pieces…they have ownership of a whole manageable project …rewards…financial or psychological… Explain what results are expected…how often the employee should… …ensure instructions are clear. Don’t check up on them….allow them space to… Give lots of praise, helpful feedback…it boosts confidence…

A bad Delegator Reference The manager clearly doesn’t follow: 1. The manager says, ‘I don’t want to give you anything too difficult.’ So it isn’t challenging. 3. He starts by saying, ‘I know you’re really busy but… 5. He doesn’t ask the employee to explain the instructions back to him. 6. He won’t be available to answer questions. 7. He doesn’t give any praise for the work the employee did on the schedules last time.

Writing: Report Writing Writing tips: Reports should be clearly laid out to make them easy to read. They often include headings such as:  Introduction  Finding  Conclusion (s)  Recommendation (s)

Report on: Suitability of Ludova Technologies Slovensko (LTS) Always give the report an overall title Use abbreviations for names to reduce the number of words

Introduction This aim of this report is to assess whether the Slovakia company Ludova Technologies would be a suitable supplier of electrical goods for us. Where possible use standard phrases. The report needs to be clearly divided into sections. Each section requires a suitable title.

Findings A recent visit to the company showed that its facilities are quite old, which results in a rather limited production capacity. Despite this, lTS produces an extensive range of high-quality products including radios, CD players, cassette and video recorders. However, the out-of-date machinery means length delivery times of up to three months. This situation may change when the planned modernization takes place next year. Use linking words to connect ideas

Conclusion At present LTS would not be suitable for large orders requiring quick delivery. Use formal language and no short forms

Recommendations It is recommended that we remain in contact with LTS and reconsider a supply contract once the factory modernization is completed. Keep introductions, conclusions and recommendations to just one sentence.

Report on: visits to website and proposed marketing strategy Introduction The aim of this report is to comment on the number of people visiting the company website in the last three months and propose a marketing strategy for the next three months. Findings It is found that over the last three months, the number of visitors has increased by 650. There are two reasons for the increase. First of all, we launched a newsletter for subscribers. Secondly in may, we ran a competition which was very popular. With regard to the costs, banners have cost 3,200 Euros a month but very few people seem to visit the website as a result of these.

Recommendations In order to increase the number of visitors, I would recommend that we continue with the newsletter and run more competitions and quizzes. I also propose that we stop using banners and put more resources into setting up links with other sites to increase the traffic.

Your company requires a taxi firm that it could use on a regular basis for staff and clients. Your secretary has selected two advertisements from the local newspaper. ◇ Look at the advertisements below, on which you have already made some handwritten notes. ◇ Then, using all your notes, write a proposal for your line manager, saying which firm you think your company should use. ◇ Write 120~140 words on a separate sheet.
