AGENDA Introduction Performance-Based Tasks for Grades Write your own Performance-Based Tasks Share Tasks Questions & Answers

"In this interactive session, examples will be given of how to lead one's class in engaging real-world performance-based tasks. During the session you will be actively involved in developing real-world scenarios that you can use in your classrooms."

Task: Candy Bars Standard: Number Sense and Operations - Fractions Grade Level: 5 One afternoon at math club, each of the club’s officers brought their own candy bar. Each candy bar was the same size. Throughout the meeting, all of the officers munched on their candy bars. At the end of the meeting, everyone was complaining about having stomach aches.

Here is a list of what the officers consumed: Maria: two-sixths of her candy bar Frank: two-thirds of his candy bar Lakeisha: three-fourths of her candy bar Pablo: one-half of his candy bar Zia: one-third of her candy bar Your Job: Determine which of the officers ate the most? †Who ate the least? †How much did they eat all together?

Task: Bikes and Trikes Standard: Operations and Algebraic Thinking Grade Level – 4

The cycle shop on Main Street sells bikes (two wheels) and trikes (three wheels). 1. Yesterday, Sarah counted all of the cycles in the shop. There were seven bikes and four trikes in the shop. How many wheels were there on these eleven cycles? ______________ Show your calculation.

2. Today, Sarah counted all of the wheels of all of the cycles in the shop. She found that there were 30 wheels in all. There were the same number of bikes as there were trikes. How many bikes were there? ______________ How many trikes were there? ______________ Show how you figured it out.

Task: Garden Design Standard: Measurement and Data Grade Level: 3

Here is a plan of Martin’s garden. The areas which have X’s in them show where he planted flowers. 1 square = 1 square unit AXXXXBXX XXXXXX XXXXXXX XXX CXXXXX XXXXX DXXXXX XXXXX

What is the area of shape A? _____ square units What shape has the largest area? ________ Explain how you figured it out. ___________________________________________________ On the diagram above, draw a different shape that has the same area as shape A. Label you shape E.
