Growth of Transportation Henry Clay and the “American System”

The American System A system of roads and canals that would link the nation together and make trade easier A National Bank to stabilize the economy High tariffs (taxes) on imported goods to protect American businesses (draw a picture to represent each part)

Steamboats Steamboats were a major form of transportation in the United States in the early 1800’s. They transported goods up and down rivers

The Erie Canal Factory owners wanted to get from the Atlantic to Great Lakes They dug a man-made river called a canal to transport goods.

The Erie Canal The Erie Canal is a 363 mile canal started in 1817 and finished in It Stretches from Hudson River in NY to Lake Erie. It was the largest canal in the world at that time

Railroads Railroads were developed to improve transportation across the expanding United States.

Railroads The “ Pacific Railway Acts” gave money to two railroad companies to build a railroad across the United States, called the “Transcontinental Railroad”
