Practically oriented programmes in upper secondary school (high school) Often centered around vocational colleges in larger cities. Accredited by the Danish Ministry of Education Different directions: Transportation, Building, Media, Health, Care and Pedagogy ect graduated in 2009

Teachers qualifications at practically oriented programmes in upper secondary school Very diverse backgrounds. Could be a former teacher a Primary school (Bachelor: 3½ years of study at University College), at graduated from university, a carpenter.. Today at least a level corresponding to 2-3 years study at University Colleges plus 2 years of work. 1 year of educational theory aimed at practically oriented programmes. (Diplomuddannelse i erhvervspædagogik at Nationalt Center for Erhvervspædagogik - NCE) 5

Academically oriented programmes in upper secondary school (high school) 61 % : Gymnasium (stx): 3 year. Consist of a broad range of subjects in the fields of the humanities, natural science and social science. 11 % The Higher Preparatory Examination (hf): 2 years. Consist of a broad range of subjects in the fields of the humanities, natural science and social science. 20 % - Higher Commercial Examination Programme (hhx): 3 years. focuses on business and socio-economic disciplines in combination with foreign languages and other general subjects. 8 % - The Higher Technical Examination Programme (htx): 3 years. Has its focus on technological and scientific subjects in combination with general subjects graduated in 2010

Teachers qualifications at academically oriented programmes in upper secondary school (high school) Studies at university in two subjects, which qualify teaching in two subjects in school. E.g. English and Mathematics - Bachelor: 3 year - Master: 2 years Employment at school. During first year complete a course in educational theory and practice (Pædagogikum). Must be passed in order to continue employment in school. 7

Statistics About 600 students a year Receiving a salary since they are emplyoed. Must pass the practical test and theoretical test in order to continue the employment. Less that 10 didn’t pass last year Very low dropout-rate Many of the students have been teaching at the school before obtaining the ”Pædagogikum” 9

Goal for the curriculum To educate a reflective pratictioner (Donald Schon), who is able to understand og develop her/his ways of teaching by involving research and theories about relevant matters. To give the student the competence til reflect (A. Giddens) in relation to own classroom practice and in colaboarion with other subjetcs and collegues. 10

Structure – three tracks Teaching in collegues classes – 485 hours (i.e. about 1/3). Observing in the beginning and later on taking more and more over. Teaching in own classes - Ca. 565 hours (i.e. about 1/3) Educational theory – 485 hours (i.e. about 1/3) 23 days seminars + preparation. 11

Teaching in collegues classes Supervising: Between apprenticeship and coaching Less guiding and more supporting and coaching The collegue has (maybe) received 1 day’s instructions in being a supervisor 12

Teaching i own classes Usually 2 classes. One in each subject. Applying the theory and reseach on own classroom practice. Trial and error! 13

Educational theory 4 days seminar in each subject. i.e. 8 days in all. Subject specific didactics (What to teach) 3 days seminar about the interaction between the different subjects 2 x 3 days seminar Non-subject-specific didactics (How to teach). 6 workshop-days during the year with different themes. 14

The triangle of didactics 15 SUBSTANCE PUPIL/STUDENTTEACHER

Involved persons The student Internal supervisors (collegue). Most often 2 designated by the school. Master supervisor (internal). Designated by the school. External supervisor. Teacher at another school but designated by the Ministry of education. 16

Three visits 3 times during the year the external supervisor from the Ministry of Education observes the student’s teaching. November, February and May. After the last visit the internal master supervisor and the external supervisior formulates an opinion. The student can pass or dumb. 17
