Water Safety

Aims Learn the water safety code that helps protect people from the dangers in and around water Learn how to recognise hazards and assess risks Know what to do in an emergency situation: Stop, Think, Assess, Call (STAC)

Activity Sheet 1 1: Are there areas of water where you live, think of some examples. 2: Name 3 water based activities. 3: What are the hazards associated with these activities?

Why Drowning Accidents Happen Ignorance or disregard of danger. Unrealistic idea about open water swimming. Unfamiliar surroundings. Lack of competent supervision. Unprotected access to danger. Victims inability to save themselves or be rescued.

S - STOP, look around and listen to see exactly what has happened. T - THINK ‘Safety’ and decide where the dangers are. A - ASSESS the incident and decide what is important e.g. serious injuries, unsafe location. C - CALL 999 try and stay calm until the emergency services arrive.
