High-level Overview – So Far Only Native Americans live in Texas Spanish Conquistadors explore Texas Find no Gold Discover that Native Americans can be hostile THEREFORE – Spain has little interest in Texas 1685 La Salle arrives in Texas (by accident) and builds Ft. St. Louis Spain is now concerned about the French intruding into Texas Spain creates the Mission-Presidio System to control Texas Goal is to get Native Americans to become more “Spanish” System fails since Indians don’t join in large numbers and many are still hostile Spain/Mexico creates the Empresario System to recruit settlers into Texas Need a buffer zone between Mexico and the US Most Mexicans don’t want to settle in Texas due to hostile Native Americans and differences in geography Empresarios focus mostly on recruiting settlers from US (who are to become Mexican)
