Function of Digestive System 1. The breaking down of food into substances the body can use 2. Two kinds of digestion: mechanical and chemical 3. Mechanical breaks down food into smaller pieces 4. Chemical uses enzymes (special proteins) to break down food into smaller pieces for cellular absorption

Main Organs of Digestive System 5. Salivary Glands a) Located in mouth b) Secrete saliva c) Begins chemical digestion d) Breaks down starches and carbohydrates into simple sugars 6. Esophagus a) Carries food from mouth to stomach b) Uses peristalsis (contraction and relaxation of muscles)

Stomach a) Food travels in from esophagus b) Hydrochloric acid beaks down food c) Mucus protects it from acid d) Involuntary muscle movement mashes food into chyme 8. Small Intestine a) Chyme comes in from the stomach b) Nutrients absorbed into the bloodstream through villi c) Uses peristalsis

Large Intestine a) Food comes in from the small intestine b) Only waste left (small intestine absorbed all of the nutrients) c) Absorbs most of the water d) Sends any solids to excretory system 10. Rectum a) Stores the solid waste until it is ready for excretion from the body
