School Counseling and Guidance Program Classroom Guidance Results Christine Cura

California Healthy Kids Survey Violence & Safety BBVM students ( 29%) have been harassed because of race, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, or disability *Student reported data

Needs Violence & Safety PPerceived Safety of the School OOnly 19% of BVM students feel very safe at school SSame as state average

Needs Violence & Safety PPhysical fight 222% BVM students have been in a physical fight EEven though the percentage of BVM students is lower than the state average…

PPhysical fights occur mostly among m ales

Based on CHKS, we found…  high harassment rates  low perceived safety of the school  increased physical fights among males

Personal/Social Standard A  Students will acquire knowledge, attitudes, and interpersonal skills to help them understand and respect self and others Personal/Social Standard B  Students will make decisions, set goals, and take necessary action to achieve goals Personal/Social Standard C  Students will understand safety and survival skills

Grades 7 & 8 September-November Health/Science Classes – Statistics – Definition of bullying – Types of bullying – Who are the bullies? Who is targeted? – Reporting – Role-play (conflict-resolution scenarios)

8% knew how many children who will miss school for the fear of being bullied 76% knew how many children who will miss school for the fear of being bullied

 66% identified the right option to report bullying incidences to an adult if rumors were being spread to the person 75% identified the right option to report bullying incidences to an adult if rumors were being spread to the person

 61% strongly believed it is important to stop bullying 81% strongly believed it is important to stop bullying

The reason we are teaching this is because we are trying to improve our bullying referral rates

Overall, research says that students who behave better, achieve better (Van Horn, 2003) This means that the lower the bullying rates, the more student achievement rates increase

GPA Results

 Building rapport with Health/Science teachers  Colleague assistance for administrative duties  Being prepared and organized eased anxiety  Make sure classrooms have working projectors  More hands-on activities to foster the building of conflict resolution skills  Do not conduct guidance lessons back-to-back

 Students have the attitudes and knowledge about bullying, but more emphasis on skill-building  Not all students learn at the same pace  Bullying rates may not reflect an accurate representation of the school  GPA may take a while to see significant improvements  Guidance lesson only occurred over the course of one day  Presentations should occur at all Health/Science classes to reach all students

 More bullying lessons to occur over the course of the year  Systematic bullying prevention/intervention needs to occur at the middle school at 3 levels (individual, classroom, school-levels)  More prevention/intervention needs to occur for males (group, anger management, conflict resolution, peer mediators)

The school counseling program is contributing in a meaningful way to the academic achievement of all students. Thank you for your support of the school counseling program.
