RIGHT TO PRIVACY A presentation by: Stacy Leatherberry Kristyn Bryson Mandy Timms Lisa Wheeler Jacob Sabins

What is your right to privacy? “ The right of people to be secure in their person’s houses, papers, and effects, against unreasonable searches and seizures, shall not be violated, and no warrants shall issue, but upon probable cause, supported by Oath or affirmation, and particularly describing the place to be searched, and the persons or things to be seized.” The Fourth Amendment, Bill of Rights

“Just the facts, ma’am…” In 1996, polls found 86% of Americans were somewhat or really concerned about threats to personal privacy. In 1997, 92% were concerned. Since 1974, 70-80% of those polled said they are opposed to wiretaps in the U.S. Source: Harris Equifax & Electronic Privacy Information Center.

1 out of every 3 people surveyed said that they would be uncomfortable having their online activities profiled. 82% are VERY uncomfortable with online activities being merged together with information such as Driver’s License, credit card numbers, etc. 72% said there should be new laws protect privacy on the net Source:

Things to think about: Has your privacy been invaded in your lifetime? Do you think that personal information you give to companies is confidential? Would you object to the FBI placing a wiretap on your personal phone? Should businesses, or schools for that matter, require random drug tests of their employees or students? How would you feel if officials searched your dorm room weekly?
