Poetry Analysis Reminders  Read the poem at least twice. Then try to summarize the content/ “plot” of the poem in your own words. What is it literally about?  Remember FIDDS … Look at the figurative language, imagery and word choices. What can you infer about the poem’s deeper meaning based on these things?  Also, look at the structure of the poem. Pay attention to line breaks, stanza breaks, rhyme, meter, etc…

Warm Up: Reading Comprehension Practice  Read the poem “The Latin Deli: An Ars Poetica.” On a separate sheet of paper, write down one example of figurative language and one example of imagery. Then answer the questions that follow on a separate sheet of paper. Make sure your name is on the paper. I will be collecting them when time is up.

“A Long Way Gone Chapter 9- Sticky note for the question below as you read…  Short Answer (OER): What is one theme you see emerging in this chapter? Use evidence from the text to back up your answer. (Remember, use the APE- Answer, Prove, Explain format.) HOMEWORK if you don’t finish!

Examples of “Good” Thesis Statements from Period One!  America should not intervene in human rights violations in other countries because, not only does it make enemies out of other governments, third world countries won’t be able to assist us in the future.  The United States should not intervene in human rights issues in other countries because it’s disrespectful to the leaders of those countries and the United States should focus on their own problems.  The United States should intervene in human rights violations in other countries because they can help free a large group of people and gain allies in the process.

Persuasive Writing Practice  Look at your thesis from your betrayal essay. Did you include a “because” with your two clear reasons in your thesis? Re- write it now and make sure you include a because statement.  Then, edit the one from last class.  Exit Ticket: Both thesis rewrites!
