Presentation transcript:

CC-JP The current state of play Keisuke Kamimura (GLOCOM) Motohiro Tsuchiya (Keio University/GLOCOM)

GLOCOM: Who we are ■Established in 1991 as what is now called a social enterprise, under the International University of Japan. ■Specializing in the study of (again) what is now called 'information society'. ■Under a University system, but managed independently both in financing and staffing. ■Engaged in policy research on regulation and deregulation of telecommunication, and Internet and broadband.

How did Creative Commons Japan begin? ■March, 2003: Conversation with Creative Commons in Stanford ■April, 2003: Signed in MoU and CC-JP launched ■May, 2003: Word-to-word translation of the generic license set completed. ■March, 2004: CC-JP license set completed. ■March, 2005: "Creative Commons: Intellectual Property Rights in the Digital Age" (ISBN X) published from NTT Publishing. ■May, 2005: Joint research with CC-UK funded by British Royal Academy and the Japan Society for Promoting Science.

The Book ■Co-authored by two lawyers, two law professors (including Professor Lessig), one political scientist, and a socio-linguist(!)

Joint research with CC-UK ■Comparative study on copyright systems from a creative commons perspective. ■UK: Programme in Comparative Media Law and Policy at Oxford University ■Japan: GLOCOM ■Reciprocal visits to Japan and UK

Problems, or struggles ■Fund-raising □Joint research with CC-UK came only after the number of failed proposals. ■Encouraging content creators □commonsphere is trying to address this. ■Less legal expertise □Fewer lawyers and legal experts participated than other iCommons projects. (which may or may not be good....)

The way forward ■Two teams □Legal/licensing: iCommons and other existing activities □Media and content: 'commonsphere', a portal site for content published under creative commons licenses is planned. ■Derivative Only License (DOL): Strong requirements from the Japanese cultural geeks (animations, video games...) □No reproducing of the content as it is! ■And a Creative Commons forum in Asia region!

Thank you!
