Presentation transcript:

Creative Writing Day Two Syllabus and Freewriting

Your note cards Freewriting practice No reliable internet – come to V-12! Don’t just read off a Powerpoint – elaborate! Visual learner Spelling and grammar issues Doodling Introvert Likes clear structure Trouble reading off Powerpoint (Let me know what would be better)

Turn in your letters to me!

Toolbox Unit Goals: to give you all the basic tools most writers use to generate ideas and make your writing alive. If I told you to write me a story tonight, I predict most of them would be... well, not very good. (Mine either!) Why?

Importance of Play... Our best material comes from playing, without fear and without judgment. Think about yourself as a child. Did you think you were a good artist? Did you think you think you were a good actor? Did you think you sang well? (Or did you care if you didn’t?) Did you like the stories you wrote and told? Did you think you were a good dancer?

 Inner Critic vs. Inner Creator

#1 Freewriting Rules 1. Write without stopping. 2. Write for the whole time. 3. Don’t worry about spelling and grammar (for now!). 4. Follow the dog.

Freewriting Hints Have any of you kept a journal before? Why’d you stop? Start in the present moment with what you are thinking and feeling. Describe your surroundings using all your senses. If you feel stiff or self-conscious, write about it!

Close Your Eyes and Think of Nothing...

 What Happened?

Hear your teacher’s freewrite... Written just this morning! No idea where I was going...

JOURNAL #2: FREEWRITING Afterward, you will have an opportunity to share (in small groups) Options: Share all of what you wrote Share some of what you wrote Talk about what you wrote Talk about the process Listener: Be present, attentive, and receptive

Review the Syllabus 1. Read over the last page of the syllabus. 2. Underline things you think are important. 3. Ask teacher clarifying questions. 4. Test your partner with quiz questions. FUN SYLLABUS QUIZ ON MONDAY!

Homework Write yourself a letter I will give to you at the end of the semester. Only you will read it! What could you write?

Letter to yourself... Goals for the year Predictions Questions Advice Record the moment
