El Greco ( ) Spanish Renaissance

Portrait of a Knight with his Hand on his Breast, 1580

The Burial of Count Orga, 1586 Pay attention to where you look when you look at this painting. Does your eye keep moving back to one figure in particular or does your eye move all around the painting? Why? Do you like the work? Why? Does the work feel realistic? Do the people look real?

St. Martin and the Beggar, This painting is very typical of El Greco’s style. The subject matter is religious. The colors are at once vibrant yet washed with a grey-blue pigmentation. The figures are unusually elongated – notice how long the beggar’s torso and arms seem.

Paul, the Apostle, 1612

Mater Dolorosa, 1590’s

The Study of a Man, 1595

Portrait of a Woman in a Fur Wrap, El Greco was famous for his portrait work. This is one of the only portraits he did of a woman. This painting feels very different from the other works we have looked at. What is different?

Toledo, Does this remind you of Van Gogh’s “Starry Starry Night”? What is the overall feel of this painting? Do you like it?
