What is History? Why should we study it?   PRIMARY SOURCE: Pieces of first hand information from people who actually witnessed an event.  EXAMPLES: photographs, journals, official documents SECONDARY SOURCE: An account provided after the fact by people who did not witness the event.  EXAMPLES: Encyclopedias, textbooks, Historical fiction   

What is History? Why should we study it? HISTORICAL INTERPRETATION: A process of finding meaning of historical events. Historians collect information and add their analysis of events to facts they have judged to be true. EXAMPLE: Quotations from historians on a particular subject

What is History? Why should we study it?  KEY TERMS Conquistador- A Spanish conqueror seeking fortune in the New World. Colony- A group of people who settle in a distant land.   Charter- A legal document issued by a king or queen giving certain rights to a person or company. Established church- The religion of a state or country established by a monarch.

EXPLORATION What was the major motivation for European exploration? PROFIT. They wanted land, riches, and wealth. Describe the relationship between the French and the Native Americans. They were business partners. The French and the Native Americans were allies, they trusted one another.

What was the goal of the Conquistadors? EXPLORATION What was the goal of the Conquistadors? To conquer a large empire for Spain. What was an effect of Christopher Columbus’ voyages to the Americas? A transfer of foods between Europe and the Americas.

JAMESTOWN AND PLYMOUTH What was the purpose of the Mayflower Compact? To establish laws for the general good of the colony. What was the historical significance of the Virginia House of Burgesses? To begin a tradition of representative government in the English colonies.

JAMESTOWN AND PLYMOUTH Explain how Plymouth colony succeeded. Squanto taught them how to grow native crops He also showed the Pilgrims how to find food sources in rivers such as eel. What were the origins of representative government in the English colonies? They were influenced by English traditions such as the MAGNA CARTA and PARLIAMENT.

JAMESTOWN AND PLYMOUTH Why did many religious groups in Europe face religious persecution? Most European rulers believed in order to have control, they must support a particular religion. Those who were persecuted did not follow the established church of the country. How did the Mayflower Compact solve future problems among Plymouth settlers? The Mayflower Compact was a plan of government that outlined specific roles and responsibilities of all colonists, everyone worked for the common good of the colonies.
