EOLSS CONTRIBUTIONS Guide to writing Mathematical /Chemical parts

Main Components of EOLSS Chapters Text (Times New Roman) Tables (Times New Roman) Graphics (Figures and photographs in jpg, gif, cdr, png, bmp, tif) MATHEMATICS (Recommended MathType or MS Equation Editor) CHEMICAL FORMULAS (Recommended MathType or MS Equation Editor as far as possible OR other standard packages)

Submissions in Latex can also be made but the following have also to be provided to verify conversion of Latex into MS Word Latex and associated files (such as DVI files etc…) A pdf print view of the manuscript

Why should MATHEMATICS be in MathType or MS Equation Editor or in some other Math format only? Because it is a system that is convenient to write mathematical parts It gives you a wide choice of symbols and operators When a document is converted into electronic format for publication, the entire expression is converted into an image without distortion, thus, there is no font recognition problem which applies only to text.

Why should Chemical Formulas be in MathType/MS Equation Editor or in other standard package only? Because they preserve the integrity of the expressions. (if they are written in text form, expressions tend to break between lines especially at minus ‘-’ signs which are regarded as hyphens in text) When a document is converted into electronic format for publication, the entire expression is converted into an image without distortion, thus, there is no font recognition problem which applies only to text.

The appearance of a page with Maths in HTML after conversion from MS Word

When you click on a Math field in a document in HTML the Math field is zoomed as shown below for clarity

Therefore a mathematical part should be entirely in Math format Not as a hybrid of Math, text, graphics in which case the conversion does not preserve the integrity of the expression. In a hybrid field the Math part alone is zoomed when clicked, the other parts are not. The expression looses its original form and becomes unintelligible. Some symbols may not be faithfully reproduced in other versions of publication On the whole, the equation or expression runs the risk of losing its intended sense and the reader will be confused

Hybrid fields E = m Text mode Math mode A Text mode Graphics mode Math mode

Hybrid fields must be avoided because They may not reveal the problems when you view a Word document Image parts are not firmly attached to the desired location in the mathematical expression or even in a character string of text. For example, arrows in expressions such as A B may not remain in their desired places following change of format even in the same document since they are not tied to the text. When the document is converted, they may float around the page or even be lost without trace.

Hybrid fields Some special symbols may not be recognized under all circumstances and they may wrongly appear as other (wrong) symbols or by a blank squares ⃞
