How were tanks portrayed by the British gov’t? How do German soldiers react to seeing the British tanks on the battlefield? Do you believe tanks were useful to the war? Explain. If you sleep during the video or are on your phone the whole time you will receive a zero for the notes grade.

Bell Ringer What does M.A.I.N. stand for? (what were the 4 causes of the war)?

5. War of Technology German’s U-Boat Germany developed the submarine Stealthy, hidden=very effective Had no room for survivors Previously, ships took enemy survivors, now they all drown

6. America Intervenes in the War President Wilson tried to maintain neutrality. Won reelection in 1916 based on keeping us out of war. We had close ties with the Allies Eventually we would be expected to help them Deadlock in the war also led to the USA intervening No one was “winning”, Allies need our help

6. America Intervenes in the War USA was fed up with German actions in war Zimmerman Telegram Germany tried to convince Mexico to fight the USA German U-Boats sink ships Lusitania sunk by Germans British passenger ship 1000 passengers killed w/ 128 Americans Sussex sunk by Germans French ship Germany promised to stop using U-Boat warfare but quickly resumed

7. Battle of Argonne Forest “One of the greatest American battles of WWI” Fought in France against the Germans 1.2 Million Americans fought 117,000 killed or wounded American Expeditionary Force under the command of General John J. Pershing Pres. Wilson would not allow African-Americans to serve in the AEF Alvin York most decorated of American soldiers in WWI Killed 25 Germans and took 132 prisoners

Video: The Lost Battalion American troops in WWI Cut off and surrounded by German troops in Argonne Forest in 1918 Run low on supplies, have no way to contact other troops, continuous attacks Based on real events and real people Complete the handout as you watch the movie. 8. The Home Front Women and African Americans Work in factories and go to war White men are gone, someone has to do their job Selective Service Act is passed Only 32,000 had volunteered to fight in the war, the USA needed many more soldiers millions of American men registered for the draft If your name is pulled from the draft, you must go to war War cost $30 billion higher taxes and war bonds pay for the war

WWI Worksheet Using the McGraw Hill (blue) book Answer the 15 questions about WWI. Write on a separate sheet of paper. When everyone is done, we will finish “The Last Battalion”

Letter Home On the back of your video guide: Write a letter home from the perspective of a WWI soldier in the Battle of Argonne Forest. In your letter, use details to explain what the conditions are like in the war. Be creative and be descriptive, use details from the video.

Wilson’s Fourteen Points Wilson wanted to make the world safe for democracy Introduced his 14 Points in a speech Believed each nationality deserved its own nation and government League of Nations Organization of nations to mediate international disputes

Peace Negotiations-Treaty of Versailles Wilson goes to the treaty table with a list of 14 items that needed to be addressed to avoid another war. 14 Points Immediately in trouble as he did not take any Senators with him At odds with other Allied leaders at the Paris Peace Conference who wanted to impose harsh penalties on the Germans Gives up most of his 14 points except the creation of the League of Nations

Austria-Hungary and Turkey Germany Austria-Hungary and Turkey -Germany loses territory to France and Poland as well as overseas colonies. -Germany had to reduce their military strength, forced to accept blame for starting the war and to pay reparations to the Allies. -Austria-Hungary is divided into several new national states. -Turkey lost its territories in the Middle East League of Nations -League of Nations was created to serve as a forum to settle disputes before it came to war. The U.S. and Russia failed to join it. Peace terms ending WWI

The Senate Refuses to Accept the Treaty of Versailles Senate was concerned that it would lead the U.S. into unnecessary military commitments. Wilson refused to compromise Henry Cabot Lodge led the opposition. He was a strong supporter of imperialism he wanted the U.S. to be free to pursue that goal. Wilson takes his case directly to the American people. Wilson suffered a stroke and the treaty is not accepted.

After the War America returns to its more traditional policy of isolationism

Review Create and complete the following chart in your notes to review for the test. Reasons for the beginning of WWI: Spark that started the war: New weapons used in the war: Reasons why the USA joined WWI: Key people in WWI: Treaties that came at the end of the war: 1. 2. 3. 4. 5.
