What things require a process?

Brushing teeth o Pour recommended amount of mouthwash into your mouth o Put toothpaste on toothbrush o Spit out foam o Swish mouthwash around o Put toothbrush with toothpaste on it in your mouth

Making a sandwich… O Place both slices of bread together O Spread condiment(s) (of choice) on both slices of bread O Wash your hands O Gather materials

Washing hair O Put head under water O Gather materials needed O Pour shampoo into your hand or apply directly to hair O Adjust water temperature O Massage shampoo into hair

Writing… …is also a PROCESS Writing: Takes time…shouldn’t be rushed Requires YOUR attention 6 Traits of Writing: Ideas (must be supported) Organizations (most logical) Sentence structure/variety Word choice (not elementary) Conventions (grammar) Voice (tone)

STEP 1 Think about the following: Type of writing What am I writing about? Why am I writing about this? Who is going to read? BRAINSTORM: Organize ideas/notes in logical order Use graphic organizer  This will be done in Writer’s Corner !

STEP 2 Transfer prewriting into essay format FOCUS on ideas and organization NOT errors. Write on every other line!  This will be done in Writer’s Corner !

Step 3 Revise means change (in an effort to improve or make better)! Focus is on CHANGING content (actual information) using the 4 R’s of Revision: REplace REfine REorganize Remove  This will be done in Writer’s Corner !

Step 4  Edit = FIX mistakes  USE proofreading marks!! Focus on correcting errors in: – Grammar – Spelling/Usage – Capitalization – Punctuation – Other… I WILL READ my essay from the end to beginning—sentence by sentence.  This will be done in Writer’s Corner.

Step 5 Produce final draft for teacher evaluation. – Still revising and editing 6 th & 7 th Grades ONLY:  One appropriate writing utensil ONLY!  Handwriting MUST be legible!  STAAR lined paper used—26 lines only! 8 th Grade ONLY: Typed final drafts following guidelines (for document set up) EVERYONE… SUBMIT on time!

Mrs. Chambers’s Procedure within the Writing Process After ing, YOU WILL do the following…

Self Revise & Edit 1. After writing the first draft, you will: – Put writing utensil down – Breathe – Read YOUR first draft 2. AFTER reading YOUR first draft, you will: – REVISE YOUR first draft. 4 R’s !!! – EDIT YOUR first draft for errors in spelling, capitalization, punctuation, usage, grammar…. READ sentences from end to beginning !

Self Revise & Edit AFTER self revising and editing, you will: Produce a 2 nd Draft following the guidelines !  This will be done in the Writer’s Corner ! 2 nd Draft Guidelines: Use blue or black ink or pencil Write on every other line Obtain parent signature Have grading pen

Next Step… After producing 2 nd Draft, you WILL:  PEER Revise/Edit Read someone else’s essay Use a grading pen and proofreading marks to:  Find and correct errors… READ sentences from end to beginning  Suggest changes… 4 R’s  Use blank lines to correct errors and suggest changes Communicate corrections and suggestions in a positive manner.  Writer MUST be receptive.  Peer editor/reviser MUST be able to explain changes/suggestions.

FINALLY… After PEER Revising & Editing: Carefully consider corrections and suggestions your peer made. Continue revising and editing accordingly. READ sentences from end to beginning. *** You’re never done until you submit the final draft. Schedule a conference with Mrs. Chambers for her feedback if you desire.  This MUST happen during Intervention. Prepare to produce the final draft.
