Questions?

ELA in 4 th Grade My goal is to help students become better readers and writers by modeling what good readers and writers do, and by giving them time to read and write every day. How? reading out loud to students, sharing my thinking process as I work to comprehend and make meaning writing in front of my students as I model the writing process using mentor texts (picture books / chapter books) as models of what good writers do Reading and Writing go

Reading Cognitive Strategies (what readers think about) -Background knowledge -Making Predictions -Questioning -Making Inferences -Determining Importance Genre in 4 th grade -Realistic Fiction -Expository (informational) -Traditional Literature -Drama -Poetry **Students in 4 th grade will read various types of genre and be able to recognize the structure. **Students in 4 th grade will be able to read various types of genre and comprehend the text at a higher cognitive level.

Higher Level Thinking… Reading

Writing Written Compositions -Students will be able to write a personal narrative composition and an expository composition. -Students will participate in minilessons that show what good writers do, and they will learn about the craft of writing. Revising and Editing - Students will be able to revise a piece of writing (add or delete information & make improvements to the content). -Students will be able to edit a piece of writing (check for grammar and punctuation mistakes).

Personal Narrative: PROMPT – Write about a time you had to make a choice. *with instruction and practice, this is the kind of writing we are working toward

Expository Writing: PROMPT: Write about your favorite place to spend time. Describe the place and explain what makes it special. *with instruction and practice, this is the type of writing we are working toward
