Acting Locally, Conserving Globally UNDP/GEF Small Grants Programme

 Established in 1992 (2002 in Namibia)  Administered by the UNDP on behalf of the GEF  Only one of the GEF portfolio exclusively implemented by one implementing agency  UNDP corporate commitment to: SGP development and success, integration into CO operations

SGP is offered in countries

SGP IN NAMIBIA  Namibia admitted April 2002 as 65 th Country; 13 th African country & 4 th SADC country  Consultations with NGOs Sept 2002

SGP works with local communities  Provides up to $50,000 grants to NGOs and CBOs (Project duration: up to 3 years)  For community initiatives that address the GEF Focal areas  SGP compliments Regular and Medium-Sized GEF Project funding – window for NGO/CBO direct participation in GEF mandate  Has funded more than 3000 community-based projects

Funding Criteria Example from Uganda  Proponents: registered and recognized Ugandan CBO, NGO, or institution involved in community- level initiatives, aimed at promoting conservation of natural resources while at the same time improving local people’s livelihood.  GEF focal areas – biodiversity, climate change, international waters, land degradation  Global environmental benefits  Promotion of partnerships and sustainability  Gender roles and relationships  Technical and financial viability and appropriate institutional framework for implementation  Innovative approaches

SGP Country Programme Strategy  Specific to each country context  Combines global and national criteria and concerns  Offers guidance for programme implementation and selection of projects.  Constitutes the baseline for programme assessment.

SGP Emphasis on Participation  SGP project development, implementation, and monitoring and evaluation is based on participation by community members and local stakeholders.
